Metro Rail Takeover Set for March 2026: Telangana Charts the Next Phase for Hyderabad Metro

Hyderabad Metro Rail is entering a decisive moment in its journey. The Government of Telangana has confirmed that the takeover of the Metro Rail operations from Larsen & Toubro is on track to be completed by March 2026, marking the end of the current financial year.

This transition signals more than an administrative change. It represents a strategic step toward strengthening public ownership, operational clarity, and long-term sustainability of one of India’s most advanced urban transit systems.

A Clear Timeline and Firm Direction

At a high-level review meeting on December 16th 2025, Sri. K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chief Secretary to the Government of Telangana, directed that the takeover process be completed smoothly and within the stipulated timeline. He emphasized that the transition must align fully with the agreement reached between the Government and Larsen & Toubro, ensuring continuity and stability across the Metro’s operations.

To maintain momentum, the Chief Secretary instructed officials to execute all planned actions systematically over the next 100 days. The focus is clear: speed with structure, and progress without disruption.

Ensuring Continuity Without Disruption

A key priority outlined during the meeting was safeguarding existing agreements and operational frameworks during the transition. The Chief Secretary made it explicit that the takeover should proceed without any hindrance to ongoing contracts, services, or commuter experience.

To accelerate the process, the transaction advisor IDBI Capital has been directed to finalize its report at the earliest. This report will play a critical role in enabling the formal completion of the takeover. L&T has also been asked to extend full cooperation to ensure a seamless handover.

Preparing for the Next Operating Chapter

Once the takeover is completed, operational responsibility will formally shift to Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited. In preparation, Sarfaraz Ahmad, Managing Director of HMRL, has been directed to begin work on detailed proposals related to operations and maintenance.

This forward-looking approach ensures that the Metro remains efficient, commuter-focused, and resilient during and after the transition.

A Meeting of Key Stakeholders

The review meeting brought together senior leadership and technical experts central to the process. Attendees included NVS Reddy, Advisor for Urban Transport to the Government of Telangana, Vikas Raj, KVB Reddy, officials from IDBI, DVS Raju, and senior officers from HMRL.

Their collective presence underscored the importance of coordination, accountability, and shared intent in delivering this transition successfully.

What This Means for Hyderabad

For commuters, the message is reassuring. Services will continue uninterrupted, with safety, reliability, and efficiency remaining central. For the city, the takeover represents a step toward greater public stewardship of critical urban infrastructure.

As March 2026 approaches, Hyderabad Metro Rail stands at the threshold of its next phase. One defined by clarity, continuity, and a renewed commitment to serving the city with confidence and scale.
