Station Planning

Station Concept:

  • The Stations being windows to the metro service are tastefully designed reflecting local culture and flavour, functional aesthetics, user friendly, energy efficient and with a station architecture that is site specific and environmentally compatible.
  • The design identifies significant architectural features which should be taken into account. Along with a responsive design stations offer various facilities for the passengers.
  • Stations will be covered by an overlapping roofing system, open at sides, covering the platform, staircases & escalators designed based on architectural elements and functional aspects.

Technical Influence:

  • The layout of the stations is influenced by the track geometry, operational requirements, predicted passenger flows, ROW availability and electrical & mechanical requirements.
  • The station is divided into public & non-public areas (areas where access is restricted).
  • Architectural planning, also indicates, State of art, Railway engineering equipment's installations at station concourse level for smooth Metro Rail operations and Passenger Safety.
  • Station Manager is located at convenient place with ease of access, if any passenger desire instant helps.

Commuter Facilities:

  • Ticketing Counters/Booths have been provided at all Stations along with Ticket Vending Machines making ticketing process simpler and faster.
  • Pedestrian facilities from the road to the concourse/car park and/or to the ticket counters and back shall have been provided to enable unhindered smooth flow of pedestrians using the Metro and making the commuting experience comfortable.
  • Toilets are provided separate for male and female and for disabled and normal passengers.
  • Facilities for disabled are provided at all stations for their safe movement from parking areas to the platforms and back. Lifts and escalators are also provided at Stations for the use of passengers including the physically challenged.
  • Facility of vending mineral water, cool drinks, coffee and tea shall be provided at all Stations.
  • Other retail areas which would enhance the experience of the rider have also been integrated in station planning.
  • Public access telephones will be provided at all Stations at convenient locations.

Station Navigation:

  • Signages are designed, with instant message transfer to passengers, from street level guiding at concourse level to platform level.

Security& Social Responsibilities:

  • Security of the commuter is a major concern and focus has been to provide advanced equipment for security of commuters shall be provided at each station like baggage screening devices, hand held devises, CCTV monitoring, access control system etc.
  • First aid medical assistance is being provided at concourse level at all stations.
  • DG and UPS back up is envisioned for all essential services.
  • Station planning is influenced by normal passenger flow and emergency evacuation scenario.
  • All required lifesaving facilities are being provided at stations, viz., fire protection, emergency lighting and signages, PA and PIDS, auto opening of ticketing gates, sizing of the staircases etc., as per relevant standards.

Rolling Stock

Rolling Stock Features:

  • Metros around the world are there to give comfort to the commuter and at a price which is easy on the pocket. India's millions and the especially the denizens of Hyderabad will be in for this experience in a few years from today.
  • The specification for standard gauge rolling stock is based on light weight stainless steel/Aluminum‐ bodied three‐car formations, having a trailer car between two motored driving cars. Internal wide gangways will provide ease of passenger movement and assist load distribution. Trains will be air‐ conditioned throughout with designated space for differently abled persons. LCD screen type route map indicators over all the doors and LCD TVs at suitable locations inside cars shall be provided for infotainment. Safety of commuter and operations is paramount for us and the trains will have foolproof safety features and on‐board fire & smoke detection as well.
  • These trains will have CCTV cameras in and outside the cars, mobile and laptop charging sockets inside the car, better humidity control, microprocessor‐controlled brakes, secondary air‐suspension for better ride comfort and will be capable of maintaining an average speed of 33 km/h and maximum operating speed of 80 km/h. The trains will be using regenerative electric braking thereby converting the momentum into electrical energy and feeding back to power supply system while braking. As a contribution towards the CDM this will reduce the energy requirement from the grid.
  • The maximum capacity per three car train will be approximately 965 including longitudinal seating, giving a high proportion of the floor area to standing passengers. Each car will have longitudinal seats for approximately 40 persons.
  • Total 171 cars for 57 Trains will be procured for the first phase of the project. Although with many automated functions, the ATO enabled trains will be under driver control.
  • Having all salient features which will add to the comfort and safety of the commuter, it is aesthetics combined with comfort and safety which will win the metro‐user and make them addicted. Hyundai Rotem (Korea), were chosen based not only on latest technology and price but also on cost of maintenance, service and availability of spares.. Our endeavor is to have an improvement on the existing Metro‐Rail trains.

Track Work

Executive Summary – Permanent Way

Section : Hyderabad Metro Rail Project
Gauge : 1435 mm
Length : Corridor 1 -28.87 Km, Corridor 2 -14.78 Km, Corridor 3 -27.51 Km totaling to 71.16 Route Km.
  • The permanent way consists of rails of section UIC 60, grade 1080, Head Hardened for complete main line and rails of section UIC 60, grade 880 for depots which shall be 18/13 meters long. Restraining rails of section 33 C1, grade 880 of 13 m long shall be provided for all curves of radius less than 190 m.
  • All the running rails shall be continuously welded by Flash Butt Welding/Alumino Thermic Welding processes. The track on Main Line shall be laid on plinth type ballastless track with rails discretely supported by ballastless fastenings on Concrete plinths of M 35 grade.
  • The ballastless rail fastenings are spaced at 650 mm c/c on viaduct and ramp with 1 in 20 rail inclination. The track in the depots shall be laid on ballasted track with Standard Gauge Monoblock PSC Sleepers with the density of 1540 sleepers per Km using ERC MK III fastening system and GFN Liners of indigenous make and 65 mm stone ballast with minimum cushion of 250 mm under the sleepers.
  • The cushion shall be 300 mm for test track. Portion of depot track shall also be laid as embedded track with special base plates and also on plinth with ballastless fastenings to suit the requirement.
  • All the turnouts to be negotiated are with 1 in 20 rail inclination. 1 in 9 switches of radius 300 and 190 for the main line and 1 in 7 switches of radius 190 in the depot with Zu 60 profile (thick web) shall be used.
  • Weldable CMS crossings shall be used on main line and depots and shall be subjected to explosive depth hardening to provide minimum hardness of 340 HBW. Ends of all tracks on the main line and as well in the depot like washing lines, stabling lines, workshop and inspection bay lines shall be provided with Friction type Buffer Stops.

Hyderabad Metro Rail has planned three maintenance facilities (train depots) for stabling and maintenance of trains, rail systems and engineering maintenance vehicles.
Each line has a supporting depot where all the trains of that line shall be stabled in night. These maintenance depots are manned round the clock and are equipped with all facilities and resources required for efficient and effective maintenance of rail system assets.

The three depots planned in 72 km rail network of Hyderabad Metro Rail are located at:

  • Miyapur for Corridor 1 (Miyapur –LB Nagar)
  • Falaknuma for Corridor 2 (JBS – Falaknuma)
  • Uppal for Corridor 3 (Shilparamam – Nagole)
The Uppal depot is the main depot cum workshop where the overhaul and corrective maintenance facilities for whole fleet are planned. The other two depots have basic facilities for scheduled preventive maintenance and minor corrective maintenance.

The maintenance workshops are managed by a team of managers who plan, coordinate and manage various activities in depot to ensure that the trains are well maintained and cleaned for daily passenger service.
Every night when trains return from revenue services the trains are thoroughly washed at train wash plant before it is stabled on stabling lines. Daily internal cleaning is carried out before inducting trains in service to provide clean environment and ambience to passengers.
The trains are inspected, checked and certified 'fit-for-service' to allow train service in passenger service. This requires thorough analysis of data downloaded from train, visual inspection by team of engineers & technicians, successful completion of on-board test of vital safety systems and other comfort functions of trains.
The maintenance workshops are managed by a team of managers who plan, coordinate and managevarious activities in depot to ensure that the trains are well maintained and cleaned for daily passenger service.

Automatic Fare Collection System

The ticketing solution proposed for Hyderabad Metro Rail is a state of the art Automated Fare Collection System based on Contactless Fare Media Technology.
The fare collection system divides the Metro Stations in two areas namely 'paid' and 'un-paid' areas. The paid and unpaid areas are separated by automatic entry / exit gates and fencing. It ensures only person having valid ticket enters the system. The system is designed as a closed one with ticket checking at entry and exit, hence ensuring 100% ticket check in the system.

Fare Media & Fare Products:

The tickets are of two types: Contactless Smart Card (CSC) and Contactless Smart Token (CST).Contactless Tokens are pre-paid fare media for journey between fixed set of stations. Token can be purchased for single trip or return trip and are more suitable fare media option for non-frequent users.
Contactless Smart Cards are stored value cards and are available in the form of either monetary (e-Purse) or non-monetary (Pass) or combination of both with various options to attract the regular and frequent users.Money Value equal to fare between any two stations is deducted from the stored value at the exit Gate.

General Operation:

The fare media either can be procured from the Ticket Offices or Ticket Vending Machines. Patron then proceeds to automatic Entry Gate Arrays andpresent the fare media to the contactless reader writer located on Automatic Gate. If the authentication is valid the gate will permit the patron pass through the gate to enterfrom unpaid area to paid area, else gates will restrict the entry.
In case of exit,patron using the contactless token will deposit his/her token at Exit Gate and passenger using a contactless smart card will present the card to contactless reader writer on the Automatic Gate. If all the conditions for a proper exit are met, flaps of the Automatic Gate will be opened to allow access to the passenger.

Power Supply, Traction and SCADA System

Hyderabad Metro Rail will have three elevated corridors with standard gauge system. Electrification for Metro Rail Corridors shall be through 25 kV, Single phase, 50 Hz for overhead equipment to transmit electrical energy to Locomotives/trains for driving the motors. To minimise interference with communication lines, Booster Transformer shall be provided throughout the corridors at specified locations.
Receiving Substations (RSS) are located at Uppal, Miyapur, Yosufguda&MGBS which will receive the power supply from the proposed TSTRANSCO at 132 kV voltage level.
This 132 kV supply will be stepped down to 3 phase 33 kV for lighting & general purpose and single phase 25 kV for traction purpose.
All RSS are AIS (Air Insulated Substation) and TSS shall be GIS (GasInsulated Substation).ASS (Auxiliary Substations) shall be located at each Metro Stations, Depotsand OCC for providing LV power supply with 33 kV/ 415 V for S& TC, Communications, MEP etc.
For maintenance purpose OHE (overhead equipment) will have sectioning post, sub sectioning and paralleling post at various locations.

SCADA System:

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system provide the highest level of Monitoring, controlling and command. A centralised OCC (operation Control Centre) shall be located at Uppal Depot to Control entire Power Supply and Traction system Equipment's through SCADA.

Signalling and Train Control System

  • The advanced signalling & Train Control technology, Communication Based Train Control (CBTC), is adopted for Hyderabad Metro to control the trains. Hyderabad Metro would be first in India to claim train control by CBTC technology. The trains running on three corridors will be controlled and monitored from state-of-the-art Operation Control Centre (OCC) at Uppal.
  • The trains can run with headway of 90 Sec to tackle commuters during office peak hours in morning and in evening. The overview display panel will mimic all three corridors and indicate current locations of all trains running on these corridors. The OCC shall be the primary control centre having a back-up control centre at Uppal depot to take over the operation if the OCC to be evacuated due to unforeseen situation.
  • Local ATS at station and VDU at interlocking station can also control the train when needed. Axle Counter based Fall-Back system is also adopted as secondary train detection system in all three corridors in unlikely event of failure of CBTC operation.
  • There are two major depots at Uppal and Miyapur. These depots will be controlled and monitored from independent control centres at Uppal and Miyapur respectively. The signalling at these depots shall be based on redundant Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) system.
  • Test tracks at the Uppal depot shall facilitate testing of trains before putting them in to the passenger operation to ensure safe and reliable train operation.
  • The trains shall run on Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode which is the normal mode of operation of trains. The Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system continuously monitors safe train operation and initiates necessary action if a train doesn't perform as desired.
  • There are other degraded modes of train operation such as ATP mode, RM mode and Cut out mode which will be selected as and when needed. All vital train borne equipments are highly safe and redundant to avoid any unwanted interruption of train service.
  • The station equipments e.g. Computer Based Interlocking (CBI), wayside ATP etc., are vital signalling equipments and redundantly arranged to ensure safe and uninterrupted train operation. Passenger Emergency Stop Plungers are provided on each platform and in Station Control Room (SCR) to stop a train immediately in case of emergency.

Station Concept:

Low Voltage Power Distribution System
  • Two Auxiliary transformers (33/0.415kV) are provided for each Elevated station with two separate HT feeder circuit to supply power to all the auxiliary loads.
Lighting System
  • The major lighting source will be fluorescent lamp, energy saving, high efficiency, low loss and high power factor.
  • The lighting system shall have three illumination levels such as Emergency level 33%, (off peak hour) 66% and (Peak hour) 100% which shall be controlled automatically through lux level and timer based.
Essential Power Supply (DG Set)
  • Standby generator will be provided at all stations to provide essential low voltage power supply to the essential loads that can maintain the operation in a safe environment in the event of the failure of the normal station power supply. The non-essential loads will be shed before the generator takes up the loads
Emergency Power Supply (UPS)
  • Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)will be provided with batteries at the stations to provide emergency low voltage power supply to the emergency loads that can maintain the operation in a safe environment in the event of the failure of the normal station power supply until the standby generator can take over.
Earthing System
  • The earthing system designed in accordance with Indian TN-S system shall be provided for the purpose of safety from electric shock for personnel, operation safely and to prevent stray current.
  • Main earth Mat system shall be provided for each stationto achieve the earthing resistance of less than 1 ohm for Electrical system equipment and Clean Earth Mat System shall be provided in for each station to achieve an overall earth resistance not greater than 0.5 ohm for Extra Low Voltage system equipment such as S&T, AFC and BMS system.
Low Voltage Cables
  • All low voltage cables, wires&control cables shall be XPLE, Flame Retardant Low smoke (FRLS) PVC insulated cable.
  • Cables for Emergency Services shall be of Fire Survival (FS) type cables
  • All LV cable conductors shall be of Copper.
Building Management System
  • Building Management System is for controlling and monitoring functions of Station MEP Equipment such as Lighting, Lifts and Escalators to provide better comfort for the Passengers of each station by effective utilization of Ventilation &Air Conditioning andElectrical installations.
  • Passenger Elevators suitable for Physically challengedwith SS car body, machine room-less, Electric Tractionwith Gear less motor having VVVF Control shall be provided in all stations from Street level to concourse level and concourse level to platform level.
  • Escalators suitable for semi-outdoor installation shall be provided in all stations. Steel Escalator is planned from Street level to Concourse Level and Glass Escalator (lighting below hand rail) from Concourse level to Platform level

Fire detection and Suppression System
  • Fire Detection & Alarm System of Analogue Addressable type shall be provided in all stations to detect the presence of fire and initiate the Fire Suppression action through Fire Hydrant system and Automatic Sprinkler System to provide protection from Fire.
Clean Gas flooding fire suppression system
  • Gas Flooding Systems will be installed in all Stations to protect critical Rail System equipment from fire
Co2 based internal gas suppression system
  • CO2 Fire trace system is provided to extinguish the fire inside the Critical Power Supply Panels which are located in Sub-Station.
Portable first-aid fire extinguishers
  • The extinguishers will be used to extinguish fire in the early stage to avoid major losses. Fire extinguishers are easy to handle.
  • Types of extinguishers installed in each station are Carbon Dioxide (CO2), ABC & DCP type Fire Extinguishers
Photo luminescent safety signage
  • The photo luminescent safety signage glows in darkness which will guide the safe escape of occupants even in case of the power supply failure. This can be also useful to find the location of the Fire fighting appliances in case of emergency even in darkness.

Air Conditioning System
  • Critical Rooms such as Station control Room, Ticket Office, UPS & Battery, Telecom &Signaling equipment room which are related to Rail System operation are provided with High wall split Units for air conditioning.
Ventilation System
  • Various areas in station such as Pump room, Auxiliary substation, Electrical switch room, Clean Gas Cylinder room & Toilets are provided with Mechanical Ventilation.

Water SupplySystem
  • The domestic water shall be supplied to toilets for domestic use.
Sanitary Plumbing System
  • The waste water generated within the station shall be disposed through soil pipe, which will be directly connected to manholes.
Roof Drainage & Rain Water Harvesting System
  • Rain water from roof will be collected through the gutters down take pipes which will be connected to the rain water harvesting pits. Overflow from the rain water harvesting pits will be further connected to nearby drain.
