Metro Travel Made Safer for Women with New ‘TUTEM’ App

BITS Pilani – Hyderabad Vice Chancellor Prof V. Ramgopal Rao felicitating Metro Rail MD Mr. NVS Reddy

Hyderabad Metro is taking a big leap in public safety—especially for women—with the upcoming launch of the TUTEM app (Technologies for Urban Transit to Enhance Mobility and Safe Accessibility). Developed by BITS Pilani-Hyderabad, in collaboration with Hyderabad Metro Rail, Hyderabad Police, IITs Kharagpur & Bombay, and funded by the Asian Development Bank, this tech-driven solution aims to make every part of a woman’s journey safe—from home to final destination.

HMRL MD Mr. NVS Reddy, speaking at a workshop at BITS Pilani Hyderabad, highlighted the app’s role in fulfilling CM Revanth Reddy’s vision of safer public transport. He stressed that public transit is the only sustainable fix to urban traffic chaos—and it must also be safe and inclusive.

The TUTEM app comes with two components: one for drivers and one for commuters. It ensures safety beyond just the Metro ride—covering walking, bike, auto, bus, and car travel before and after metro use. The key safety features include emergency alerts to police and notifications to family members.

Mr. Reddy also reiterated HMRL’s ongoing efforts to innovate and solve socio-economic issues through tech, noting that Hyderabad Metro has already been providing eco-friendly and safe transport to nearly 500,000 people daily for the past seven years.

BITS Pilani Vice Chancellor Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, ADB’s Ms. Josephine Aquino, Prof. Soumyo Mukherjee, Prof. Avijit Majhi and Prof. Prashanth Sahu also participated in the event.
